In Dottie Gets Spanked the story centers on Stevie, a six-year-old boy who is obsessed with Dottie, the star of an “I Love Lucy”-like television show. His mother indulges his devotion, even to the point of helping him enter a contest to get to visit the Dottie set, his father disapproves. The girls on the school bus also love the show, but think he is a freak because he is a boy who likes the show.
Haynes subtly presents the forces affecting an effeminate boy in the stilted atmosphere of fifties Long Island. He also dwells on a fascination with spanking, which is further heightened when he wins the contest to visit the Dottie studio and she is spanked during the episode he sees live.
In this short film we also get a very tasteful and sincere look at a young boy’s interest in and awareness of his sexuality. He struggles in his dreams as in real life, with his frustration and anger as he tries to figure out what normal is for him.
